Sewing Roots

Today is my Mama's birthday!

She is the one who first planted the sewing seed in my life. Now, like in just about every area of our lives...except our reactions to sappy, tear-jerking movies...she and I have entirely different styles and approaches to sewing. However, she is the one to first attempt to teach this willful student the basics of stitching (bless her heart!) and we are going to give credit where credit is due!!! I am so very grateful for her in many, many ways! The more and more I sew, the more and more I grow to love it and love her for taking the time to nurture my creativity along. Not to mention, she's ALWAYS there when I hit a bump and call her....no matter what time....to help me process and re-think. While she spends more of her time crocheting these days, she's still a wonderful seamstress.....like made my prom dress and the dresses for my bride's maids level of seamstress! Yea, lucky me!!! I of course take full advantage of her abilities every time she comes for a visit. ;)

Well, in honor of my sweet Mama and the gift of sewing she passed to me, I want to share!
I have a fat quarter of this darling Timeless Treasure print for one of you! That is, one of my lovely blog friends, a.k.a. "followers". No hoops. If you're a follower of Hopeful Threads, just leave a comment sharing who first inspired you to sew. And maybe, if you have the chance, you can just give them a call and say "Thanks!" today!

Make sure I can reach you via your comment in case you're the winner. One entry per person. I'll pick a winner next Monday, February 20th. Thanks for being a part of Hopeful Threads!

Happy Birthday Mama!
Love you much and look forward to celebrating soon!

My darling Oma is the one who I got my love of sewing from. She has only just gone into a nursing home and I was offered all of her sewing things. I have now got fabric, trims and even old handmade clothes coming out of my ears. I'm definately not complaining :)

Aren't we blessed to have had such wonderful sewing instructions to send us on our way. I can remember my mom starting a dress for my sister and myself when we went to bed. The next morning both dresses were hanging on the door for us to wear to school.

My mom tried to teach me when I was younger, but I wasn't interested. She used to sew late into the night sewing dresses, skirts, etc., for me and my two sisters. She even sewed my wedding dress and all the bridesmaids' dresses. It wasn't until many years later when I had my own child that I really wanted to learn how to sew. I mostly taught myself but had a lot of help from my mother-in-law. My mom has lost her love for sewing, and my mother-in-law has passed, both of which make me very sad. My plan is to sew until I am no longer able.

My mother was also the one to inspired me to sew. She made out Halloween costumes every single year, took months!! She is amazing, I hope I can be as good as her one day.

Oh, I recognise that beautiful fabric. I have two pieces waiting to be made into something special. I'm sure you don't want to see me win again.. and I'm on a winning streak... so I'm happy for you to leave my name out of the draw. We all did basic sewing as part of school, so it just sort of grew. My Mum made all our everyday clothes and her sister (a dressmaker), made us a fancy schmancy outfit every birthday and Christmas, always with the ever so wanted twirl factor. Happy Birthday, Mama!!!

Happy Birthday Mama!
My grandma taught and inspired me to sew. I am eternally grateful that she took the time to teach a squirmy tomboy to sit and sew!

Happy birthday to your mom! My mom inspired me to sew. I'd love to phone her up, but she passed away when I was 17.

I blogged about my mom's birthday today too! at (byathreadortwo.blogspot.com)
My mom sewed dresses for me and my five sisters until we were older and able to sew our own. So definitely it was my mom who started me off! I'm off to join your site.

My mom was not a crafty person, so I really didn' t have a special person - guess I got the "craft bug" from my grandmother (it must have skipped a generation, huh.)

Thanks, Peggy

My older cousin Gloria inspired me to sew but I learned all my sewing skills in junior high school.

Happy Birthday to your lovely Mum! I can't credit my Mum with teaching me to sew, even though she did do it herself. I started teaching myself a few years ago, I don't think my Mum could have taught me until my interest was there anyway. She did however teach me to knit...but I'm still hopeless at it! Ha.
That fat quarter of fabric is gorgeous!! Fingers crossed!

I was inspired by my Mom and my Aunt. I loved sewing clothes when I was younger, and now love quilting. That fabric is adorable - thank you for the chance to win.
