Shorts -TO- Bloomer #2

Now for the second episode of Shorts To Bloomers!
(If you missed episode 1, it's a version for those with a serger and can be found here.)
Once again I used the Simple 30 Min. Shorts with the extension in length as noted on pattern.

Iron and stitch the hem on both legs leaving a small opening to insert elastic.
Measure elastic 1" longer than the width of the leg. In this case, the leg of the shorts measure 7" so I cut my elastic 8". Insert elastic in opening and thread through the hem with a large safety pin. Sew the elastic ends together and sew the opening closed.

Voila! Shorts are now bloomers! Easy as that!

Ok, I have finally completed my first set of bloomers using this pattern and method and I can't help but think that the waistline is going to be too big. It just seems like a 4T should be smaller around the waist. My elastic measurement was 18.5 inches according to the pattern. I'm just sayin. What is your opinion regarding the waist sizes of those you have made/seen thus far? It's been a long time since I have seen a 4T - mine are all teens and adults now.

You also said to make the elastic an inch larger than the leg opening. Did you mean an inch smaller? I tried it an inch larger and it had no elasticity at all in the leg opening. I made my elastic 2 inches smaller as it seemed to look like it would be the right amount around their legs. I don't know. I'm kinda flyin by the seat of my pants here. I really do hope they are ok. If I hear different from you before I mail them, I will make adjustments.

I think she meant the width of the pant leg, not the entire length all the way around the pant leg. Although until I make them, that sounds like that would make the elastic too tight. Guess it depends on how wide or full the pant leg is to begin with.

I've allowed the extra amount of elastic for overlap when stitching. This can of course be adjusted as needed.
